When we talk about SEO, search engine rankings we usually avoid things like keyword placement and jump in to things such as keyword density, backlinks, and the major impacting factors of what will get our sites higher in the search rankings. Recently while looking at new ways of optimizing sites to gain the upper hand I started to look at more subtle ways we can use and control in order to rank well for our given terms and noticed that keyword placement can matter.
To get the most from your articles, web pages, and other online media you need to assure and prove to both humans and search engines your site is relevant to your chosen keywords, and more importantly you need to show it is more relevant than your competition. I have seen many "SEO Guru's" whom tell people that the keyword should be in certain places however the placement of each individual word is more important than meets the eye.
Simply placing your keywords in the opening line, and at the end is not enough, your text needs to flow and be totally keyword rich throughout in order to gain the maximum from your SEO efforts, this being said spamming your text with keywords will not do you any favors in the long run. The best practice for making sure you have your keywords in the right place is to highlight them much like the Google Cache does. This will give you a view of the flow and you should aim to have a nice even spread of both the [exact] phrase as well as the individual words placed nicely throughout each paragraph and the entire page.
